Monoliths
Modernist architecture departed significantly from that which came before it by rejecting the decorative. Instead embracing a dictum of form following function, a style of strong vertical and horizontal lines emerged, especially in the International Style. The facades of these buildings were the face of an ideology, one which has been shown to consistently fall far short of its lofty goals. However, the legacy of these styles and their adoption by businesses and corporations have had a distinct impact on the architecture and spatial relationships of contemporary urban living and working spaces. This series of photographs uses photomanipulation to make visible the shortcomings and ego of such architectural styles by exaggerating their scale and perspective and by creating an analogy between the rectilinear designs of the International Style and graphs and patterns.
